7 Remote Work Myths Busted

The gig industry has given birth to many freelancers in Dubai who are highly trained in different fields. While this number continues to increase every day, many people in the world are still skeptical about working remotely. 

It turns out many modern-day workers prefer the benefits that are associated with freelancing, and if given a chance, the majority of them will quit their day jobs. There are many stereotypes concerning the industry that are quite slow to die. 

Supposing you googled ‘working from home,’ you will be greeted by pictures of people smiling in front of their laptops. Some of these images show someone working while on the beach. While some myths portray working from home as a ‘useless’ career, others are also notorious for painting a false ‘paradise.’ 

For instance, you will not always be in a cheerful mood as some tasks might just wear you out. Moreover, why would anyone work at the beach? Aren’t they scared of their laptops getting spoilt by the sand or the water? Have they even considered the adverse effects of direct UV lights they have exposed themselves to? 

If you are considering becoming a freelancer in the UAE, then you are in the right place. This post will take you through seven of the most popular misconceptions regarding remote working.

1. Remote employees are not productive.

This is a classic myth cited by many employers concerning those that work from home. These execs mostly get concerned that the freelancers would often spend more time binging Netflix shows or working on non-work related things. This is, without a doubt, a possibility, and there are a few employees that would take such an approach. 

Simply because there are no colleagues or bosses to keep an eye on you doesn’t mean that work shouldn’t go as planned. In fact, many remote workers have reported working much longer than those that work from the office. 

This is because their offices are home-based; hence, no time wasted in commutes, and also, the office doesn’t get closed by 5 P.M. Moreover, before deciding to follow this direction, potential employees have already done soul searching to determine whether or not freelancing is for them. This means that they have to put in more work, should they want it to work out for them.

2. Remote work leads to poor communication.

Communication is always a worrying factor for any working environment, whether in-office or remotely if the workers do not maintain a good working relationship. There are many real-time communication platforms that can be used by remote workers. If prioritized, there is no legitimate reason for communication to suffer. 

Remote work limits training opportunities.

This is a fairly true myth because if the employees aren’t physically present at the office, it might be hard to train them on how to go about the work. However, freelancers in Dubai always pick a niche that they are well-conversant with. 

Many of these remote workers have had training and experience in that particular field for them to start working. There are many online courses, video lessons, and other popular educational tools available for them to further their training for the industry that they are affiliated with.

3. Remote work increases loneliness.

Simply because they are working from home does not mean that remote workers are lonely. Many hold the belief that without co-workers, these freelancers do not have any social interaction and are locked up in their homes for longer periods. While this is partly true, it is not usually the case. 

Many freelancers can work in coffee shops, co-working spaces, libraries, and many other places with human interaction. This is mostly the case for those that live alone. Those that have relatives or other people they live with, have no problems having their offices set up from there. 

Research undertaken by Amerisleep found out that 57% of remote workers are happier than their office counterparts, 80% of them are less stressed thanks to remote working, and 75% of them would prefer to work from home for the rest of their careers if possible. 

These statistics clearly indicate that the majority of people that work from home are not lonely, let alone being depressed. If remote work increased loneliness, why then would many of them still prefer such a working condition?

4. Working remotely has a better work-life balance.

When someone hears that you work from home, they envision you doing a few tasks before embarking on home-related work. Such includes taking care of the children, going to the gym, cooking food for the family, etc. 

While this might be the case for some people, successful freelancers in Dubai avoid home-life disruptions during work-hours at all cost. Everything else can be done during your break time or after you have completed the day’s tasks. 

Furthermore, just as it is the case for any other work environment, having a good work-life balance is essential for personal development. One should ensure that it is achieved regardless of their working condition.

5. Collaboration is difficult for a remote team.

While this is the biggest concern for executives all over the world, this problem has already been solved by the existing collaboration tools that are readily available. Software such as Trello and Slack assist remote workers in working collaboratively, hence eliminating the worries about efficiency. 

Apps such as Skype and Zoom enable virtual meetings to take place. This makes communication and collaboration for remote workers, the least of your concerns if you’re the employer. 

6. Remote work is only for a few professionals.

One of the biggest myths surrounding the gig economy is that many people believe that this type of work is only for a few professions. Many are of the notion that remote work is only done by the likes of coders, programmers, writers, and web designers. However, in the digital age, almost any type of work can be done remotely. 

The numbers of freelancers in the UAE have even skyrocketed after seeing that many companies now prefer working with freelancers. Furthermore, there are some freelancing jobs that are not quite popular, yet have good financial returns.

7. Navigating Remote Work Myths

There are plenty of stories from freelancers and employers that debunk many work-from-home myths and misconceptions. With a clear understanding of goals along with enough motivation, working from home is just like any other office work ‒ if not better.
